The ancient process of broaching (or channeling) is used split large blocks from the rock face. A line of holes is drilled into the vertical joints (cleavage planes) of the rock formation. Pneumatically operated channelers drive wedges into the holes until the stone splits off. This process eliminates the need for blasting.
Hydraulic guillotines split blocks of stone to rough shape and size. Stone cut this way may be used without further processing, although small blocks can be tumbled to smooth sharp corners and edges. For precision cutting, heavy diamond-toothed wire band and circular saws are used. Additional finishing and decorative shaping is accomplished by skilled artisans using a variety of air driven chisels, grinders, and other hand tools.
